LA County Board of Supervisors to vote on extending eviction moratorium

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is set to vote on a proposal at its next meeting to extend the County’s current eviction moratorium to September 30, 2021. In addition to extending the moratorium, which is currently set to expire June 30th, Supervisors Kuehl and Solis have proposed prohibiting landlords from applying rental payments to rental obligations other than the prospective month’s rent. Their motion also includes a provision clarifying that a tenant has an affirmative defense in any civil action or unlawful detainer proceeding initiated by their landlord on the basis of failure to pay rent during the moratorium period, if such failure was the result of the impact of COVID-19.
